Joseph Toonga is a Cameroon-born, East London-raised choreographer, movement director and Artistic Director whose practice is rooted in Hip Hop culture while refusing the boundaries traditionally placed around it.

His work moves between Hip Hop, Krump, contemporary dance and classical ballet, increasingly entering into conversation with theatre, film, music, visual art and interdisciplinary practice.

But form is only the beginning.

At the centre of Joseph's work are people.

Identity. Masculinity. Race. Family. Brotherhood. Grief. Joy. Vulnerability. Belonging.

His choreography interrogates what we carry in our bodies: histories we inherit, identities placed upon us, experiences we struggle to articulate and parts of ourselves that society does not always give us permission to reveal.

The work can be muscular and confrontational. It can also be intimate, tender and still. Joseph is interested in both, because strength and vulnerability are not opposites.
